Core Card Categories

Every Pokémon TCG deck is built from three primary card types:

  • Pokémon Cards represent creatures you battle with; they range from Basic (ready to play) to Stage 1 and Stage 2 (evolved). Advanced variants like Pokémon EX, GX, V, VMAX, and VSTAR add special powers and prize mechanics.

  • Energy Cards fuel your Pokémon’s attacks. Each card provides one unit of a specific type (Fire, Water, Psychic, etc.), and you attach them to your Pokémon to meet attack requirements.

  • Trainer Cards deliver strategic effects—draw extra cards, heal damage, or alter game state. They split into Items (instant effects like Poké Ball), Supporters (powerful effects limited to one per turn), and Stadiums (ongoing field effects).

Evolution & Special Mechanics

  • Evolution: Place a Stage 1 card on its corresponding Basic Pokémon, then a Stage 2 on that Stage 1.

  • Pokémon EX / GX / V / VMAX / VSTAR: High-impact cards with stronger attacks but grant extra Prize cards when knocked out.

  • Tag Team & Mega Evolutions: Special forms that let multiple Pokémon unite or Mega-evolve for massive power spikes.

Rarity & Set Identification

  • Rarity Symbols: Circle (Common), Diamond (Uncommon), Star (Rare), plus letters for advanced tiers (RR, SR, UR, SAR, HR).

  • Set Codes: Identify each expansion by a two- or three-letter code and collector number (e.g., SWSH 123/200).

  • Secret & Promotional Cards: Numbered beyond the set or released at events, these are prized by collectors.

Gameplay Jargon

  • Bench: Area for non-active Pokémon waiting to battle.

  • Active Pokémon: The one currently in battle.

  • Prize Cards: Set aside at start; claim one each time you Knock Out an opponent’s Pokémon.

  • Retreat Cost: Energy required to switch your Active Pokémon with one on your Bench.

  • Status Conditions: Special markers like Poisoned, Burned, or Asleep that affect Pokémon between turns.

Deck-Building Essentials

  • Consistency: Balance Pokémon, Energy, and Trainers—commonly a 20/20/20 split.

  • Tech Cards: Niche Trainer cards added to counter popular strategies.

  • Mana Curve: Distribute Evolution lines and Energy costs for smooth play progression.
